Friday's 2000AD Appreciation Page

Dedicated to the Galaxy's Greatest Comic

Borag thungg,

And welcome to Friday's unofficial 2000AD appreciation page. This page is not endorsed in any way by Fleetway Editions Ltd. who retain copyright on most of the images used on this page (if not all of them). Likewise with the characters mentioned herein. Hopefully, as this is a fan page, I will be spared the wrath of Fleetway's legal eagles - and a Rigellian Hotshot to anyone who hopes otherwise! If this page suddenly disappears, you'll know why. =)

The page is somewhat embryonic at the moment, but will I hope develop into a cool site. Future intentions include potted histories of the characters you might meet in 2000AD, and summaries of epic or important stories which have appeared within 2000AD's covers.

You can help, if you want. Anything you care to scribe, just mail it to me at [email protected] and I'll consider it for publication. Virtual LRDs to all published contributions!

Splundig vur thrigg!

So, what's 2000AD then?

2000AD is a British comic which first hit the shelves in February 1977. I say comic, but I don't think that quite does it justice. It certainly is not a comic in the vein of the Beano or Dandy. More of a graphic novel-type thing, only thinner. A bit like Marvel, DC or Dark Horse comics. 2000AD is probably best known for spawning that hard-man of Mega City 1, Judge Dredd in its second issue. In fact, Judge Dredd is probably better known than the vehicle which brought him to the masses. The stories in 2000AD are a mixture of all sorts; science fiction, mythology, magic, the paranormal, horror... in fact just about anything and everything. For example: Judge Dredd - set in a sprawling megatropolis of the future; Slaine - based on ancient Celtic mythology and history; The Journal of Luke Kirby - concerned with magyck and the Devil; Durham Red - a vampyric Search and Destroy agent... Get the picture?

2000AD recently published it's landmark 1000th issue! Congratulations to all those who have been involved over the years. Here's to the new millenium!

Who's this green guy?

This is Reg Holdsworth, erm I mean Tharg the Mighty. Tharg is the proprietor of the Galaxy's Greatest Comic, and hails from Betelgeuse. He is ably assisted in the creation of 2000AD by a staff of various droids; art droids, letter droids, script droids, make-a-coffe driods...

Them what's responsible

This should eventually build up into an extensive source of information about the various droids who have, in some way or other, contributed to 2000AD. For now, it's somewhat limited in scope - like the rest of the page! =)

The Wagner and Ezquerra droids

Script and art droids respectively. Responsible for lots of stuff, not least the creation of Judge Dredd.

The Grant droid

Oft times co-writer of Judge Dredd, including such milestone stories as The Apocalypse War, Oz, and Necropolis. Other work includes Lobo, former Judge Anderson and the odd Batman/Dredd co-production with the Wagner droid.

The Bisley droid

The brush which launched a thousand imitators. First made his mark, in my experience, painting 2000AD's Slaine strip in his signature style - lots of blood and over-emphasised muscles. Also responsible for drawing Lobo and work on the Judgement on Gotham graphic novel.

Character profiles and Potted histories

Judge Dredd
Judge Dredd

Mega City 1's most famous lawman. Judge, jury and executioner all rolled into one. Catchphrase: I AM THE LAW!.

Judge Death
Judge Death

One of the four Dark Judges (along with Fire, Fear and Mortis) originally from Deadworld. Judge Death realised that all crime was committed by the living, and so outlawed life itself. Catchphrase: The crime isssss life. The sssentence issss death

Durham Red
Durham Red

A mutant bounty hunter, Red is a vampire working, until recently, for the Search and Destroy Agency. She is one of a group known as the Strontium Dogs.

Big Dave
Big Dave

Big Dave is Manchester's hardest man. 'Nuff said.

Joe Pineapples
Joe Pineapples

A crack sniper droid. Looks hard doesn't he? He does, however, like to dress in women's clothes... One of the ABC Warriors.

Slaine
Slaine

Slaine Mac Roth, a Celtic barbarian, who undergoes a warp spasm during battle whereupon the power of the Earth Goddess courses through his veins, twisting his body into grotesque contortions. During such a spasm, Slaine might dispatch many hundreds of foe, which he would not think too many! These days, Slaine travels through time, doing deeds or derring do on behalf of the Goddess. Catchphrase: Kiss my axe.

Epic stories and important events

Um, things like the Judge Child story, Necropolis, the story where Johnny Alpha died (which was... erm... escapes me at the moment, The Final Solution possibly). This section too has yet to be developed.
