Dwarf Code

So, what's Dwarf Code then?

Dwarf Code is a somewhat cryptic-looking sequence of letters and numbers which announces to the world at large your level of Dwarfiness. That is your association with, knowledge etc. of Red Dwarf. This page presents the Dwarf Code itself, and some answers to questions which people have asked about Dwarf Code.

Dwarf Code

Notes:

Square brackets ([]) denote optional additions.
Vertical bars (|) indicate either/or cases.

DC? The version of Dwarf Code you are using - e.g. DC1.01

Ep? The number of Red Dwarf episodes you have actually seen.
? being a number on a sliding scale:
          0 - none, actually
          1 - a few
          2 - quite a lot
          3 - most
          4 - all

Note: There are currently 36 episodes of Red Dwarf which
have been screened (6 each from 6 series).

 Ch123 1 - Your favourite Dwarf character,
2 - the Dwarf character which you feel is closest to yourself
3 - the Dwarf character to which you most aspire.

        1, 2, 3 each being one of:
          C - Cat
          L - Lister
          R - Rimmer
          K - Kryten
          Ko - Kochanski
          H1 - Holly (Norm)
          H2 - Holly (Hatt)
NC - Nirvana Crane, with her constant, guilt-free sex.
          SW - Space Weevil

+/- may be used to adjust levels - e.g. use ChCL-L-- to
indicate that you are quite like Lister, but wish you were
less like Lister, or use "C+" to indicate that you are
like the Cat, only more vain. =)
          {} may be used to indicate a range or inclusion - L{R-}
might indicate "Lister with Rimmerish traits".

S? Your favourite series of Red Dwarf, taken as a whole.

Note: There have been six series of Red Dwarf screened.

FC[x|-|C]
You are, or have been (x) a member of the Official Red
Dwarf Fan Club or are explicitly not a member (-), or
you are the editor of the Fan Club magazine, Better
Than Life, and the Fan Club's Internet contact (C).

R?C?W?Con? Recording, Cast, Writers, Convention
        ? being + or - [v0.01] depending on whether you have (+)
or have not (-) been to a Red Dwarf (R)ecording, or met
a member of the (C)ast or one of the (W)riters, or
attended a (Con)vention specifically because it covered
Red Dwarf (i.e. attending a Red Dwarf con by default
because you were actually interested in the Star Trek
          content does not count).

Else, being an number relating the number of each you
have met or attended. [v0.02 on]
          e.g. R0C3W2Con1

  GOD You are Charles Daniels.

->GOD You want to be Charles Daniels. [pre v0.03]
(GOD) You want to be Charles Daniels. [v0.03 on - i.e. using the
        "aspiration" indicator as described later]

[ *grin* OK, no one will actually admit that they want to be
Charles Daniels - probably including Charles himself. =) ]

   DK? Dwarf Knowledge.
? being a number on a sliding scale:
0 - So, what's Red Dwarf again? It's about stars, yeah?
1 - I can name the characters and know what it's about
2 - I can name the chars, the actors and the episodes
and recall what most episodes were about
3 - I can do the above, and remember a fair bit of
Dwarf stuff, like Kryten's middle name.
4 - I've swallowed an Almanac of Total Knowledge and
consider myself a walking Dwarf encyclopaedia
and self-proclaimed authority on things Dwarfy.

+/- may be used to adjust levels by quarters either way -
          e.g. DK1++ is halfway between 1 and 2.

PotM Blow your own trumpet, and announce the fact that you
have had a post voted Post of the Month. Follow with
"-" if you have had a post nominated. Follow with "+"
if you have made more than one Post of the Month.

Doc[x][C][+][-][&]
You maintain, have maintained (x), or created (C) one
or more (+) newsgroup or Red Dwarf document, or an unreleased
(-)(e.g. not available for public viewing) Red Dwarf documnet,
or have contributed (&) to such.

e.g the Primer counts as a newsgroup document, the Fish List
as a Red Dwarf document and the Unofficial Newsgroup Welcome
        as an unreleased document.

Modifiers:

        +/- general intensity modifiers.
(+) aspires to be a +; may be applied in any case where
             application is sensible.

[v0.03 modifications submitted by Fraser Steele, Nick Honeywell,
 .splitbung]

Is there a way of automatically generating my Dwarf Code?
Yes! Well, there is a program, written by everyone's favourite .splitbung, which will ask a series of questions and output the corresponding Dwarf Code v0.02. The program is avaiable for download in a PKZip archive containing a DOS executable and source code. At some point, there may be a Java applet which you can run. This, however, depends on my getting round to becoming familiar with that language...

Help! I'm an engineer and I don't understand this at all! Is there a way of decoding Dwarf Code and presenting it in English?
Yep. The program mentioned above will do just this.

Isn't it all a bit of a waste of time, actually?
Absolutely, but as any Dwarfer will tell you, "It's a laugh, innit?"
